Online Gaming Hub features on BBCWorld.

This website has been featured in BBCWorld's Click Online programme. Kate Russell's Webscape shows the site and gives a description of what it is we do and a small review of how she finds it to use.

Next up, some games of a different nature. With more and more homes installing a broadband connection, online gaming continues to grow in popularity, but what is it all about?

If this is a question you've ever pondered upon then Online Gaming Hub has all the answers and a whole lot more. It's a great place to go to find out the basics about online gaming, from what games to play and where, to what equipment you'll need and how to get involved in a clan.

The layout of the site is clear and colourful with a really useful download section that houses the patches and modifications you'll need to play.

There's hints and tips about etiquette and communication, but be warned - online gaming can be very absorbing, and children especially should be moderated in the amount of time they dedicate to it.

On the subject of our younger viewers, I'd also suggest that there are certain elements to this website that some might consider a bit risqué, such as the humour displayed in the flash introduction. It's all to do with the culture of online gaming - you might compare it with the skate generation - so take care to moderate your children's access to the website if you're worried.

Jolt announces new "Community Manager"

// posted by D33 :: 17/01/2004 | 15:23 :: comments (721) :: link to story..

Jolt recently announced their new Community Manager, a David "Bigfoot" Angus. Bigfoot played a prime role within Barrysworld / Game.net for over five years thus having more than enough experience and knowledge to do the job well.

Jolt, already the biggest and quite possibly strongest remaining UK GSP continues to expand their staff team and community by introducing more free public servers, competitions and better support for new communities in upcoming months.

As big and popular as Jolt is there is still an enormous amount of people who avoid the service as their prime community and playing servers due to certain aspects such as admins and community.

Now that Jolt has an outsider joining their staff ranks, coming from a well loved community such as Barrysworld, we may see some interesting changes that will attract the UK players who have hesitated from using the service for so long.

BarrysWorld finally laid to rest.

Like most GSPs who have been around for over five years, Barrysworld has been through some seriously tough times. You can find out about their turbulent history by clicking here.

Bought and backed by Game, formally known as Electronics Boutique, when Barrysworld was on the brink of death, a deal was secured which gave new life to the service. Part of this deal was for BarrysWorld to become subscription based.

Many gamers will remember when all of the Barrysworld servers suddenly vanished from their server browsers. Due to this "either subscribe or don't play on Barrysworld" action a lot of the smaller game communities died and the larger game communities found themselves to be a fraction of their original size.

The second stage of this deal was to change the GSPs name and image. Unfortunately the change wasn't for the better. The name "Barrysworld" became "Game.net" and the fluffy green website we'd all come to love had been replaced by some cold, corporate, design.

The deal with Game soon came to an abrupt end as the mother company decided to "focus their online activity on core e-commerce services". TedTheDog, founder of Barrysworld, said he has no intention of restarting the service. Instead he's become quite nostalgic and restarted "FreddysHouse", the gaming service that evolved into Barrysworld all those years ago.

Blueyonder closes its GSP, Bygames.

// posted by D33 :: 02/01/2004 | 05:50 :: comments (1339) :: link to story..

Bygames, the popular semi-subscription GSP launched by Blueyonder around two years ago is to close on the 5th of November. Although it had its fair share of problems, most caused by the awful backend created by Eurogamer and their incompetence to fix it, the service was known to support excellent servers, a friendly active staff team and highly skilled fair admins.

Bygames was built on top of a small, close community gaming service that Blueyonder already supported. A majority of the new staff and community that followed moved over from Wireplay after it closed a second time.

However, with the death of Bygames comes the creation of Trickery, aptly titled "the home of homeless gamers". Trickery is a new website run by the staff of the original Wireplay and the soon to be late Bygames.

Created to give a home to gamers whose local GSP is shutting down, Trickery offers a warm welcome to anyone from any game community. Although not a proper GSP at this point in time several staff and community members have setup servers for people to play on.

With Wireplay setting the record for being shut down three times, Barrysworld once, Bygames once ( or soon to be ) and Jolt having to restructure one can only assume that Trickery may be a popular place in the upcoming years.

Free website template for new clans
[>] Starting a new clan can be difficult, especially if you've never done it before. We're working on a website template that covers all the areas a clan website needs. News, members, results, etc.

The design will be based on the Online Gaming Hub theme, containing yellow, blue, gray and black.

Possible gaming lessons for newbies
[>] We're thinking about doing lessons for people who want to get into a certain fps games but would like a guide to teach them the basics.

If you're interested in this sort of thing then please email me with any thoughts, suggestions or comments as they would be more than welcome.
